Saint Mary's Student Welcome Video

Working with Saint Mary's Church, I produced a video to welcome new students to Southampton. I used lots of b-roll to illustrate the different points, and worked with Emma to communicate what goes on during the year at Saints Students.

Behind the scenes

What is the process for a video like this?

First the structure. We created a list of the main points to say.

From this, we then filled out the detail- the what and the why of each point.

Then we film it. I choose the location to give new viewers some familiarity if they come to southampton, and Emma was positioned far enough away from the background to give the the shot some depth.

As we filmed, we figured out if any sentences needed rephrasing.

Having recorded the audio seperately, I synced it to the video, and then put together the good takes of each section. For these sort of videos, I tend to cut some of the gaps out to speed up the pace.

The choice of background music, or lack of it, really helps to set the tone of the video, and adds to (or hinders) the unspoken message that you communicate. There I then added b-roll, illustrating the points and providing added value and interest to the viewer.

Finally, I added the end titles and any other graphics throughout the video. With some subtle animation, this adds a bit of polish, and reinforces the branding that we want the viewers to become familar with.

Saint Mary's has such a dynamic student ministry, and having been a student there, it is always a pleasure to work and serve them!
